Tomoko Tsuruta

Tomoko Tsuruta

Tomoko Tsuruta holds a Bachelor of Arts from Lasalle College of the Arts-Goldsmiths University of London, Singapore. Her interest in art began in childhood and by the age of 18, she had lived in three different countries including Singapore, all of which have shaped her perspective on life and creativity.

Her training in Chinese ink painting, as well as its concepts and approaches all influenced her artistic style, which incorporates different types of paper and the use of traditional mediums such as ink and color pigments. She draws on her personal life experiences in order to create works that explore the concept of the integration of both the West and East.

Tsuruta is drawn to biomorphic forms that create a sense of transformation-in-progress. Her works are characterized by semi-transparency, building on thin veils layer by layer until the work evolves and finishes itself in the process. In her abstract works, she hopes to find some association with the physical world. Moreover, she prefers to leave room for mystery in her pieces by not clearly defining each meaning, so as to allow viewers to freely interpret her pieces based on their own experiences.

She is a member of Modern Art Society which is one of the oldest art societies in Singapore. She has exhibited in ION Gallery with the society in 2016.
